Stadtbrauerei Spalt.

As I have said before, Spalt holds a special place in my heart. We frequently visited on weekends, as we only lived a few minutes away in Ansbach. Lovely scenic town, nice people, great atmosphere, delicious food and drink, and fun at the Floh-Markts.

The Stadtbrauerei Spalt (Spalt City Brewery in German) is a brewery in the Middle Franconian town of Spalt which was created in the year 1879 through the merger of numerous smaller breweries.

Since 2006, it is the last municipally owned brewery in Germany.

Spalters say:

“Spalter ist keine Brauerei wie jede andere” —- “Spalter is unlike any other brewery”

“Sie steht mitten in der Stadt und gehört den 5.000 Bürgern, die nicht immer leicht zufriedenzustellen sind. Deshalb ist alles, was da herauskommt, von besonderer Hochwertigkeit. Und von besonderer Eigenheit.”

Translated:

“It's located in the heart of the city and belongs to its 5,000 residents, who aren't always easy to please. Therefore, everything that comes out of it is of exceptional quality. And uniquely unique.”

I agree!!!

Original owner’s description:

“Eichung 10/20 L gabe es ca. 1890-1930
Der Bierkrug ist ca. 100 Jahre alt, so um 1920-30
Hersteller Merkelbach & Wick, unten am Boden Stempel WW (Wick-Werke).”

Translated:

“Calibrated to 10/20 L, it was produced circa 1890-1930.
The beer stein is approximately 100 years old, circa 1920-30.
Manufactured by Merkelbach & Wick, stamped WW (Wick-Werke) on the bottom.”

I’m still researching to try to more precisely date this stein. The mark on base was used from 1921 to mid-1950s. However, I need to check when that 10/20L mark was used and other age identifying features, including hinge and lid, which are original to the stein.

See link below from steinmarks reference trying to date this stein.

Based on my understanding of the company start and end of it being a “ Aktiengesellschaft” public company, I date this stein between: 7 March, 1922 to 1937.

As always, I welcome your input and comments.
