Bürgerliches Brauhaus München — Munchner BurgerBrau

MUNCHNER = BURGERBRAU

Right side: 1654 Burger Brau Munchen

0,4L. & calibration marks deeply incised

Really nice condition all the way around, inside and out.

Nice acorn thumblift—lid has rich dark patina

Inside of lid: “W. WILD MUNCHEN” enclosed in a rectangle (1885-1900)

INK STAMP???

“Merklebach & Wick”. Note: I cannot make out all the letters from the ink stamp? There is also an “X” and looks like,e an “H4” impressed

Note left inside the lot of steins I purchased from original owner.

Same mark as mine underneath lid.

Bürgerliches Brauhaus München - BURGERBRAU MUNCHEN

Bürgerliches Brauhaus München ”translates roughly to “the citizens’ (or bourgeois) brewery of Munich.”

Historically, using “Burgerliches” in a name suggested that the establishment was associated with or founded by the local citizenry rather than being an aristocratic or exclusively royal enterprise. It reflects a connection to the everyday people of the city, implying a sense of civic pride, community ownership, and accessibility. In Munich’s rich brewing tradition, such a designation would have highlighted the brewery’s role in the social and cultural life of its citizens.

This brewery, like all Munchen breweries, has a very storied history, but this one stands out with a few others as they were taken over by the NAZI’s. The links below provide the historical context.

This steinkrug has a very cool design with lots of lettering/numbers (top, bottom, and sides).

“W. WILD MUNCHEN” engraved inside lid. He was in business from 1885-1900. The exact mark inside of lid found in Stein marks —- it has a rectangle around the letters. (SEE IMAGE).

Merklebach & Wick from 1879-1921 (SEE LAST IMAGE).

So, I believe the stein’s age is from 1885-1900 period.

I always welcome and appreciate additional information. I’d really like to know who the ink stamp on base is and significance?

Note: The stein in this link is very similar to mine, but they’re definitely different. I’d really like to know the difference between the two beyond appearances. Is mine older, for example? I like the design on mine better, but they’re both very special!!
