Romeo & Julia Masskrug

From the collection of Jorge O. Soriano

Absolutely beautiful and sexy Romeo & Juliet (Julia) porcelain Masskrug. NOTE: White spots are light reflections

Owner’s name nicely engraved. I cannot make out third letter?

Deep engraving of 1L and calibration mark - c. 1900

No maker’s marks, but interesting discoloration marks on base

westerwald Masskrug / Maßkrug 1L Saltglaze beer stein with a stunning porcelain inlay of Romeo & Juliet or in German (Romeo & Julia). Beautiful design and bright colors. Nice thumblift. Lid a little looseness, but firmly affixed.

The owner’s name is engraved on lid: “Pepi”. Pepi is a common nickname, especially in Austria and southern Germany. It is typically used as a diminutive for Josef (Joseph). Like, “Joe” in English.

The “1L” capacity and calibration marks on the (top front center) is also a date characteristic.

Dates back to c.1900

The body of this stein is in fine condition for its age.

Can anyone make out the owner’s engraved name on lid? I cannot confidently do so. Thanks.

I think it says "Pepi" (perhaps a nickname).
