Mathias Girmscheid 759 The Bride of Rheinstein

Matthias Girmscheid - mold 759

From the collection of Walter Swett

1 Liter pottery stein with figural lid in the design of a castle tower roof.

Text:
(A wedding carriage rides out of the open gate at Rheinstein Castle. The bride is very pale and looks so sad. She doesn’t love the man she is supposed to marry. To look at him gives her great pain.)
(Then a bee stings the horse, it stands high on its legs and flees. High on the ramparts her lover observes.)
(How her eyes are shining so tender and warm. They wanted to separate us through cowardly treason, but God turned for the better this malicious action.)

The theme of this stein is taken from an old German legend that tells of Gerda, the daughter of Count Diethelm of Rheinstein. Although Gerda shares a love with Helmbrecht, heir to Sternburg, Count Diethelm promises her hand in marriage to Hembrecht’s conniving uncle Gunzelin. However, fate smiles on the young lovers and Gunzelin has a fatal accident on his wedding day, allowing Gerda to marry Helmbrecht, her true love, and live happily ever after.
