Here is a 1/2 liter Merkelbach & Wick stein with a 5 pin open hinge. This style of hinge became pretty standard among manufacturers beginning about 1895. The „M&WGr“ mark stands for Merkelbach & Wick Grenzhausen and was used by the company between 1879-1921.
Merkelbach & Wick was founded in 1872 by Frederick Wilhelm Merkelbach and Georg Peter Wick. In the early 1920s, following a merger with another company, Merkelbach & Wick became Wick Werke and continued operations until it went bankrupt in 1984 (Steinmarks).
Grenzhausen was the name of the town where the manufacturer was located. In 1936, Grenzhausen merged with neighboring towns to become Höhr-Grenzhausen (Wikipedia).
The saying translates to “Old Heidelberg you fine city, rich in honors, on the Neckar and Rhine no other can equal you“
Text was taken from an 1853 poem by Josef Viktor Scheffel honoring Heidelberg. Later it was set to music by Weise von Zimmerman (BSL).
