Special order stein commemorating the 12th annual German Shooting Festival (Deutsches Bundessechiessen) held in Nürnberg in 1897 (July 4th - 11th).
Per Stein Marks, the Reinhold Merkelbach mark is dated c.1882 - 1933, but possibly not used after 1908.
Handle: RM-5 and capacity mark: RM-3 per TBSL.
The heavy ornate lid was produced and applied by A.F. Schmied & Sohn, Nürnberg.
