Possibly made in the Fritz Thenn factory or one of the other 15 Regensburg factories. It's about 6-3/4" tall and has the 1L.J. capacity mark and "E. Bauer" on the pewter lid. Because it has a five ring open pewter hinge it was probably made 1900-1930 unless it is a replacement lid it could be older.
The J & I in old German are equivalent an sound the same. "J" was used before a vowel and "I" before a consonant. It was sometimes customary in this and earlier time periods to use "J" when in all capitals. Also "J" is less likely to be confused with "1". So the "J" is the abbreviation of the German word inhalt that stands for capacity. Also note that all nouns in old German are capitalized, Summe, Inhalt and Liter.
