Merkelback & Wick made steins1872-1921. This Nurnberg Tower Souvenir is 1L and about 8" tall, and with no capacity mark or M&W logo. It has T.W. for (Theodor Wieseler) a Nuremberg merchant and GESETZLICH GESCHUTZT (Legally Protected) on the bottom. Under the pewter lid someone had an inscription engraved and also the year 1917. So this stein was made 1917 or earlier.
The building that served as the model for this stein is the landmark Frauenturm, a defensive tower constructed in the 16th century at the Nuremberg (Nürnburg) main gate. There are four similar gate towers in the old city. But all souvenir steins seem to be modelled after the Frauenturm. It's the only one with a round window at the top and four arched windows under it.
