The relief lid depicts a likeness of Michael Schottenhamel (1838-1912), originally a carpenter by trade, but he went to Munich is 1866 tp begin his ccareer as a restaurateur. A year later laid he laid the foundation for the oldest innkeeper at the Oktoberfest. He started with a small beer bar and in 1886 expanded to a canvass tent and in 1888, was the first to install electric lights in his beer tent. In 1872, he introduced Maerzen beer which ultimately became the common Oktoberfest beer. (Rastal)
Production was cut short for a second year when the Oktoberfest was cancelled.
