The lid relief depicts Hans Steyrer (1848-1906), “The Bavarian Hercules”, who is credited with being able to lift a 500 pound stone weight with a single finger. Steyrer was also a Munich restaurant owner and served as Oktoberfest host from 1879 to 1903, during which time he is credited with initiating the tradition of a lavish entry of restaurateurs and brewers in the parade that now signals the beginning of each Oktoberfest.
