Produced by Rastal as mugs and steins, both of which I have in my collection.
Designed by Oliver Weiss (Grassau am Chiemsee, Germany)
The lid relief depicts Lola Montez (1821-1861) and is the fifth in a series taken from the Schönheitengalerie (Gallery of Beauties), thirty-six portraits of beautiful women gathered by Bavarian King Ludwig I in the southern pavilion of Nymphenburg Palace in Munich, where they remain on display today. Born in Ireland in 1821 (misstated as “1818” on the lid) Elizabeth Rosanna Gilbert, better remembered by her stage name, Lola Montez, was a dancer, adventuress and mistress to King Ludwig. Original portrait by court painter Joseph Karl Stieler. (BSL)
