Produced by Rastal as mugs and steins, both of which I have in my collection.
Designed by Peter Junge and George Schatz (Munich, Germany)
The lid relief depicts Helene Sedlmayer (1813-1898) and is the first in a series taken from the Schönheitengalerie (Gallery of Beauties), thirty-six portraits of beautiful women gathered by Bavarian King Ludwig I to decorate the southern pavilion of Nymphenburg Palace in Munich, where they remain on display today. Helene was a Munich cobbler’s daughter who had come to the palace to deliver toys ordered by the queen. Original portrait by court painter Joseph Karl Stieler. (BSL)
