Spaten-Bräu 1L masskrug c. 1890-1910 type 1. Two different design types are known to me from this early period of using incised logos coloured in cobalt blue. This ‘type 1’ logo is more commonly seen and has a wider spade/shield with the trademark wording ‘Schutz-Marke’ separated each side of the base of the shield. For comparison, please refer to my separate entry for ‘type 2’.
The striking Spaten-Bräu logo was designed by Otto Hupp and patented in 1884. The malt spade is accompanied by the initials 'GS' which commemorate Spaten's innovate former owner, Gabriel Sedlmayr.
