Hauber & Reuther (Freising, Bavaria) catalogue number 173 (number stamped on the base), called 'Scrollwork with Saying' - see [link]
Mould number 173 was produced only in a 0.5 litre size. Several different forms of pewter lid are known. This example has an ornate pierced thumb-lift. Grey salt-glazed westerwald stoneware bearing a threaded relief design with purple-black (manganese) and blue (cobalt) decoration.
Text inscribed on the stein design: Wer nicht liebt Wein, Weib, Gesang, der spart sein Geld und lebt recht lang (He who does not love wine, women and song, saves his money and lives right long).
This stein was produced between 1882 and 1886, bearing the incised ‘Type 1a’ joined ‘HR’ maker’s mark on the base, which was only used by Hauber & Reuther during this short period - see [link]
