A character stein in the shape of the Berlin Bear (Berliner Bär) [link]
This stein was produced by Reinhold Merkelbach, and the design dates from circa 1880-1890.
The bear is the symbol of the city of Berlin. It is featured on Berlin's city flag and 'Wappen'.
The bear has a shooting target on it's belly. Around the base of this stein is the text: 'Xtes Deutsches Bundesschiessen 1890 Berlin' , indicating it was especially designed as a souvenir stein for the 1890 State shooting contest in Berlin. The markings on the base are the standard Reinhold Merkelbach 'star', together with the mold number 731 and the word "Geschützt' (protected trademark).
