A very nice stoneware westerwald jug, topped with a highly detailed pewter lid.
This stein was produced in the 1880 ~1900 era. It is marked only with the model number 444, but it carries no factory markings. I do not know for sure who produced this jug, but fellow collector Mike put me on the track of R. Hanke, so for the time being I'm going for that.
What I do know for sure is that the pewter lid on this jug is of a quality rarely seen. A dragon's head over the spout, a standing lion on the top of the lid and a nice ball-shaped thumbrest.
There is no capacity marking. I estimate the capacity to be around 2 liters. The jug stands 26cm tall, not including the lid. The pewter lid itself adds another 10 centimeters to the height.

You could well be right in that it may be by Hanke. The Beerstein.net has it pictured too as Hanke 444. Thanks for the comments. I agree the pewter is great.
Prosit!
