The farewell (der Abschied) and the safe return to home (das Wiedersehen) of a soldier is the theme on this large decorative plate.
The plate tells the story of a man saying goodbye to his family and his children, leaving for uncertain times in unfamiliar places..
But he makes it alive and unscathed, it seems, for the second scene on this plate pictures him being welcomed back by his wife and children in a festive parade!
The plate, marked on the base with the mold number 239, was produced in the end of the 19th century by Reinhold Merkelbach. It was designed as a decorative piece, and it will once have hung proudly above a mantlepiece, I imagine. The detailing is quite fine, and the decorations are typical of the historismus period in which it was made.
Measuring some 34 cm (appx 11 inches) in diameter and weighing 1.7 kilos, this is a great plate to have hanging on my wall now.
