RARE!! “RAR” TIGERBRAU Steinkrug

Very old and scarce (hard to find) “TIGERBRAEU” steinkrug. On the rare occasion I have seen one, they sell for a premium. I should note. I don’t sell and never have sold any steins. Recently I was asked if I would be willing to sell one of my rare steins. It was simply too difficult to let it go. I was open to the possibility of a trade for a stein that would make a nice addition to my collection, but, he only collected newer steins, post World War 2. Anyway, let’s talk about this amazing steinkrug.

The stein was made by Merkelbach & Wick while the pewter lid was made by Bauernfreund in Munich. Notice the “BAUERNFREUND MUNICH” touch mark on the inside of the lid. There are initials N.B.M. on the hinge which I’m still needing to research. It measures roughly 6 1/4" tall x 3 3/4" in diameter across the base. It has a faintly impressed company mark, Merkelbach & Wick, on the underside of the base together with an impressed “X” which you can see in close up image. The body of the stein itself is decorated with a colorful resting or preparing to pounce tiger under the word “TIGERBRAEU”. The stein does not have capacity or calibration marks, but looks like 1/2L. The decoration on the lid is just awesome!!! It reads “TIGERBRAEU - BIERE DE MUNICH” around the central theme, The Tiger. The condition is excellent.

L. Bauernfreund & Co., a pewterware manufacturer based in Munich, Germany, was established in 1883 by brothers Leopold and Nathan Bauernfreund. Leopold departed the business in 1892 to pursue other ventures, while Nathan continued operations until the company was deregistered in 1911. (See link below for more details.).

This steinkrug is one of my top 1/2 L favorites!!! It is in my top 5, out of probably a couple hundred or more of the 1/2L type.

Side note: I really should know more about my collection than I do, but, my learning journey is evolving and it’s fun. I especially enjoy reading about all the German breweries’ storied histories, and slowly starting to get a bit more interested in the stein makers “producers”. Same with the pewter master craftsman.
