Looks like there may have been some kind of mark on base, but it also could just be my imagination?

Mönchsbräu Münchberg Bayern.

I believe this is a rare and unique German brewery stein, meaning, I have never seen another “Mönchsbräu Münchberg Bayern” steinkrug. Presumably there were at least 105 similar steinkrugs at that time, but, this is the only one just like this that I have seen. Regardless, I feel very fortunate to have been able to add this one to my German brewery steinkrug collection.

Seller’s Description: “ Sehr alter 1/2 Liter Bierkrug Mönchsbräu Münchberg Bayern Zinndeckel” or translated “Very old 1/2 liter beer mug Mönchsbräu Münchberg Bavaria tin lid”.

Early Developments in Münchberg’s Brewing History.

Münchberg, sometimes referred to as the “Bierstadt” (beer town), once hosted as many as four major breweries in the 19th century. These included the Nützel-Bräu, Bären-Bräu, Mönchsbräu, and Bischoff-Bräu. Historical documents note that brewing in Münchberg dates back to the early 1800s. For example, the Nützel-Bräu traces its origins to 1802 when Johann Andreas Pöhlmann acquired the estate where brewing commenced, while the Bären-Bräu was founded in 1834 by Heinrich Pöhlmann.

Mönchsbräu – A Closer Look

The Mönchsbräu is particularly notable:

• Foundation and Growth: Founded in 1840 by Friedrich Holper, it originally operated under his name. By 1890, the brewery had established a significant presence by erecting a dedicated brewery building on Zelchstraße. This structure symbolized the growth and institutionalization of the brewing trade in Münchberg.
• 20th Century Changes: During the late 1920s, the original brewery building of the Mönchsbräu was demolished. In 1931, the brewing operations were taken over by the Aktienbrauerei Helmbrechts. This takeover marked a period of consolidation in the regional brewing industry.
• Legacy and Collectibles: Today, memorabilia such as historical stock certificates and branded items serve as tangible links to Mönchsbräu’s storied past. Auction records and private collections occasionally surface, highlighting the brewery’s legacy in regional economic and cultural history.
