Red Overlay Glass Stein

Uit de verzameling van Andrew Ives

Blown glass with applied handle. The molten clear glass blob or gather was dipped into molten red glass, creating the deep red outer layer. Once the stein was formed, the outer layer was etched or ground away to create the design in the "cut to clear" method revealing the contrast between the two color layers.
The glass lid insert is etched with the name "Benno".
The simple pewter ring holding the glass lid insert, thin thumb lift, and small diameter closed hinge would be consistent the decreased use of pewter around the mid 1800's due to the rising cost of tin, as noted in the article "Pewter Fittings Through the Ages" by John McGregor.
This is the first closed 7 ring hinge I have seen. If anyone has any information on this type of hinge, it would be appreciated.
