Gambrinus Regensburg Stoneware Masskrug / /Maßkrug

Uit de verzameling van Jorge O. Soriano

Do you know the date ??? Gambrinus Regensburg Stoneware Masskrug / /Maßkrug

Side view

Unusual “S” looking mark top-center

Side view

No capacity or calibration marks in the usual location on the side

This little guy is trying to tell us something, I believe. Do you know what that might be??? Please see pictures to follow for possible answers???

The lid’s brushed painted colors are simply beautiful

What is he thinking? As I said in the Description sec., it is trying to tell us something???

Look at the facial expression - deep in thought ?

What is that yellowish thing on his sleeve???

He’s holding that frothy mug of beer so affectionately

See style of hat, WW1 ? Also notice he has something strapped over his shoulder onto his back?

Not sure if the engraving on the back of thumb-lift was placed there by designer, but unusual nonetheless

No marks inside of lid

I believe this Masskrug might be bigger than 1L. ???

No marks on base. ANYONE IN THE COMMUNITY KNOW THE AGE, PRODUCER, and/or DESIGNER???

This is a very unique (maybe rare?) Gambrinus Maßkrug. I certainly have never seen one like it.

For starters, it does not have the usual 1L mark on the side or center. There is what appears to be the letter “S”, sort of, front-center Not sure what it signifies?

Next, there is a small man sitting atop the lid using both hands to hold a giant (relatively) frothy mug of brew. The details and colors are truly beautiful and his facial expression and the colors of his eyes are very realistic. He has something strapped over his shoulder onto his back? I’m not sure what to make of him with that style of hat, his boots with orange colored tops, and the orange banner or whatever it is wrapped around him. There is something more than meets the eye here, I believe. Also, is “he” made of pottery? I think so.

Next, look at the beautiful brushed, lite colors on the inlay (pink, blue, green, orange). I’m not sure exactly what the lid is made from; it looks a bit different from my other Gambrinus Masskrugs.

I think this might be larger than 1 L., but its exact capacity remains uncertain.

Lastly, just look at the detail on body of this massive Gambrinus!!! What’s not to like about it!?

The strap is tight and the tang is firmly affixed to the lid. The body is in fine condition and very clean. There is a hairline crack barely visible on the bottom part of handle that cannot be felt and does not affect its structural integrity or presentation.

Note: I forgot to mention, there is definitely some engraving on backside of thumb-lift, but I can’t make it out. Fortunately I have lots of pictures for this one.

THE LEGEND of GAMBRINUS:

The legendary and mythical figure, Gambrinus, dates, shall we say, way back. But perhaps the best information I have read on the legend of Gambrinus is here: [link],Tacitus%20in%20about%2098%20CE.

I personally love the legend of Gambrinus and the lidded Regensburg Gambrinus Maßkrugs! I would like to find a hand-painted body of one.

As always, I very much welcome your feedback to fill in my unknowns or uncertainties, or to correct errors. But most importantly, to learn and share our common passion for the world of steins.

Cheers!
