1894 VIII Turnfest, Breslau Germany

Merkelbach & Wick

Uit de verzameling van Mike Finn

Merkelbach & Wick made steins 1872-1921, this "1894 VIII Turnfest held in Breslau Germany" souvenir stein is about 8" to the top of the lid. It has a M&W 1/2L capacity mark and handle. No makers mark, mold number or Germany. It does have a pewter touch mark on the shank N.B.M. for (Nathan Bauernfreund, Munich). M&W made the base and N.B.M. installed the lids and marketed them. It was required in 1887 to have Germany or Made in Germany on all exports. It didn't need Germany on the base because it was not for export. This stein was probably made 1893-1894. The central figure in this design is Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), or Turnvater Jahn, who is credited with responsibility for the rebirth of gymnastics in Germany during the early 19th century, and for development of gymnastics equipment such as the parallel bars and pommel horse. It has "Zur Erlnnerung an das VIII Deutsche Turnfest zu Breslau 1894" (To commemorate the VIII German Gymnastics Festival in Breslau 1894). The pewter lid has "Gut Heil!" (Good health!) the thumblift has the 4F symbol for "Frisch, Fromm, Fröhlich, Frei" (Fresh, Pious, Happy, Free).
