Wheel thrown body with incised ornamental patterns and applied handle. Salt glazed.
Cylindrical body shape was popular c.1700-1820.
Produced in the westerwald region. westerwald gray steins without cobalt or manganese decorations were popular in the 2nd half of the 18th century *Early Stoneware Steins from the Les Paul Collection page 384*
Large closed 5 ring hinge and hollow ball thumb lift is appropriate for the time period.

The lid appears to have a tavern number (16) etched on it. The center medallion depicts what looks like a tavern scene and a wife trying to get her husband to come home.
Wording on the medallion: "Not going home with you, I'm drinking here!"

The pewter touchmark is identified as belonging to Johann Georg Adam Friedrich of Regensburg. Friedrich became a master pewterer c.1769 and is referenced up until c.1808.
