The front of the stein has the insignia of the 4th Infantry Division. Below that the stein is named to Lt.Col. Wes Franklin. On the left side is a painting or a deer (stag). On the right side is a painting of a grey bearded man smoking a pipe in traditional German garb in a wilderness setting. Presumably this is the Lt.Col.Both the lid and thumblift have relief images of deer. It seems that the Lt.Col. was either an avid hunter or a wildlife enthusist, three images of deer makes a point. The 4th Infantry was in Germany from May, 1951 to May, 1956 so the stein is dated in that range.
