Salt-glazed stoneware with a gently grooved ‘combed’ body surface. The front is plain apart from a crudely hand-engraved ‘E’ for ‘Eichstrich’ (i.e. calibration line) – see Rübensaal (2008) Der bayerische Maßkrug und das bayerische Bier. This appears to be a mug which was calibrated in the period immediately after the introduction of the new litre standard measure (which replaced the old ‘Mass’ (Measure) in Bavaria from ~1871 when Germany unified), but preceding the widespread introduction of the 1L capacity mark.
Flat pewter lid with a ball thumb-lift and an open three-ring hinge of the type produced from about 1875.
