Earthenware stein with tin oxide glazing. Holds approximately 1.0 liter.
Straight sided with no flair at the base and an indented rim where the top pewter ring sits is indicative of northern German faience steins.
Similar "D" shaped handles (flat on the inside/rounded on the outside) that taper to about half the width at the bottom, and have a rounded or pointed lower attachment, can be attributed to a few factories in the Thuringen Region. The flower in the central decoration, that has a "sunburst" in the center, is a design style possibly attributed to the Erfurt factory.
No factory or artist mark on the base.
The hollow ball thumb lift and large closed 5 ring hinge are appropriate for the time period.
The touch marks on the under side of the lid are currently unidentified.
The lid is personalized "L.E.J." and dated 1776.
There also appears to be a number 8 on the lid. Tavern number possibly?
