Milk Glass Stein

Aus die Sammlung von Andrew Ives

Blown milk glass stein. Milk glass (glass colored with tin oxide) was commonly used as a substitute for expensive porcelain from the late 1600's to the early 1800's. Decorated with enamel flowers. Applied scrolled, ribbon handle.
Biedermeier cylindrical shape (tapered toward top) common c.1800-1840. Visible pontil mark consistent with pre-1860's/70's.
Folk art or floral designs indicative of late 1700's-early 1800's.
The design of the beautiful thumb lift and ornate lid appears typical for the Biedermeier period. The large closed 5 ring hinge and foot ring are also appropriate for the time period. The lid is personalized "A.F.N."
C.1835-1840, due to the increasing price of tin, foot rings began disappearing and lids, thumb lifts, and hinges were being reduced in size.
I would rough date this stein c.1820's, maybe early 1830's.
