Walzenkrug

Aus die Sammlung von Andrew Ives

westerwald salt-glazed stein.
Holds approximately .75 liter.
Cylindrical body with cobalt blue coloring for the accent color.
Red (reed) technique used to create the incised main decorations. Stamped flowers on the back side.

From the book "Early Stoneware Steins" by Beatrix Adler:
Pg. 387: "Shortly before 1800, knibis and applied reliefs had almost entirely disappeared." The Red (reed) technique and stamping were the preferred decorating methods until c.1850.
The Beer Stein Book indicates the lower end of the handle pulled into a tail was one of the techniques potters used c.1700 - 1780's.

Per The Beer Stein Book, the smooth hollow ball thumb lift was common in the latter half of the 1800's. The closed 5 ring hinge, and lid are appropriate for the time period.

The lid is personalized "I.A.W." and appears to be dated 1787.
