An unusual stein made using soft paste porcelain. The right side (Photo 1) is the seal of Syracuse University. Originally Genesee Wesleyan Seminary located in Lima, NY and founded in 1831, it later dissolved and reopened as Syracuse College at Syracuse in 1870. The right side (Photo 2) is a diamond shape with the greek letters Kappa Alpha Theta. KAT is a woman's social fraternity founded at Indiana Asbury College (now DePauw University) in 1867. It was the first woman's fraternity founded in the United States and later in Canada. It's referred to as a woman's fraternity as the word sorority didn't exist when it was founded. The front of the stein (Photo 3) is the signature of one Liz Brydon, presumably the original owner. The set on lid features a finial of Otto the Orange, the mascot of Syracuse U. and a thumblift and hinge, obviously nonfunctional. In the base (Photo 4) is a nude femal figure. Under the lid (Photo 5) is another nude female figure. Both of these figures are fully formed characters, they were created, hand painted, and then attached. The date of the stein is unknown but my guess would be the 1950's. It's unusual to find a sorority stein at all but one with these features is very unusual, the only one I've seen.
