Matthias Germscheid in 1884 was apparently engaged initially in the manufacture of clay pipes.1903 the firm was listed as a “stoneware factory” and the employer of forty workers. They are still in business today, "This Monkey with Top Hat" stein is approximately 8-1/2" tall, no capacity mark or makers mark. There is #828 and Germany on the bottom. There are three versions of this 828 Monkey.
1. The original looks the same except it has an additional base and is taller. On the base is "Trag deinen Affen mit Geduld, An dem bist du nur selber Schuld". (Bear your monkey with patience, it is your own fault.)
2. This "Monkey with Top Hat" with the monkey tail and two square patches with
"Wird der Aff im Bierfass gross, ist auch gleich der Teufel los."
(If the monkey gets big in the beer barrel, all hell is about to break loose.) All three have this saying on the stein body.
3. The newest does not have a monkey tail and only one place for the same saying on the back. And the 828 mold number is also on the back.
