Pre-Prohibition Rathskeller Mug

Aus die Sammlung von Chuck Huseman

Original pre-Prohibition advertising mug for the famed Soulas Rathskeller in Philadelphia

For those who don't know, the word "rathskeller" is German for a beer hall or restaurant in the basement of a building.

In 1892, brewer-turned-real estate investor, John Betz, finished construction of his building at the corner of Broad St. & Penn Square in downtown Philadelphia. Later that same year, Charles W. Soulas, a restaurateur, opened his rathskeller. His son, Gus, would eventually take over the business until it closed some time around WWI due to anti-German sentiment.
