Here's a bit of a mystery stein. Not for the usual reasons, I know the maker and mold number. This is a Marzi and Remy 1783, stoneware, 1/2 liter, recessed base. In the first place to have a depiction of naked students on a stein at that time was not done, but it is here. They are exiting Kalb's Hotel (Calf's Hotel) presumably after making use of the bar. The text translates to:
"A critical day of the first order!"
And the stein itself is quite different for a Marzi and Remy. I can't remember them ever using the speckled glaze. And the grape vine relef that frames the central decoration is also unusual. Even the handle is one seldom used by M&R. Could this have been a special order? As far as the subject matter, my guess is that it represents a student society initiation.
“Kalb’s – Hôtel”
(Calf’s Hotel)
“Ein kritischer Tag I. Ordnung!”
(A critical day of the first order!) (YBSL)
