A mid- to late 19th century jug, stoneware, made in Germany.
Around the body we see reliefs of mythological persons, and a verse.
The verse around the body reads: "Wer nicht liebt Wein Weib Gesangh, der bleibt ein Narr Sein leben lang" (He who does not love wine, women and song, will remain a fool all his life."
Martin Luther is credited with the verse “He who does not love wine, women, song, will remain a fool all his life”, but it is not included in his traditional writings. It is only documented that he is mentioned for the first time in 1775 and is often attributed to Luther in the following years.
