Brass Stein

Aus die Sammlung von Stompy Snowflake

Stein is repousseed brass, with cast brass fittings and spun brass lid. The finial is a replacement, the original being missing. There are many small holes caused by over zealous polishing. The underside of the base is sealed by a layer of, probably, repoussage pitch (this would be a mix of pitch, powder - usually plaster - and oil). The images are 1x musicians and 5x dancing peasants, at least one couple is reversed from an engraving by Hans Sebald Beham, c1550, whose images often feature on ceramic steins.
The text: '[GE]IPER GEIPER DV MVS PLASEN DAN DANSSEN DIE PAVREN ALS WEREN SIE RASEND'
'WER WILL HALTEN SEINEN SCHEDEL GANS DER LAS DEN BAVREN IHBEN DANS'
Notes: The beginnings of both lines are covered by the soldered join.
The words are old German, a mixture of German and Dutch.
6/11 Ns are reversed. The Ws have the centre strokes crossed. AL, HE and HB are conjoined; HB probably should be HR (ihren).
Diesinger 52 and Marzi & Remy 889 have similar texts. Beer Stein Library gives translations.
This translation: Geiper, Geiper you must play then the peasants will dance line crazy/He who keeps his head whole should let the peasants dance.
Although the subject is German, the handle is more English style.
