Jug with Crests

Reinhold Merkelbach - Modell Nr. 13

Aus die Sammlung von Heiner Kiessling

The central shield shown on this piece depicts the royal arms of England during the reigns of Edward III, Henry IV, Edward IV and Elizabeth I. The surrounding “crown and garter” reading: “Honi soit qui mal y pense” (Shame on him who thinks ill of it) is an allusion to the Royal Order of the Garter, Britian’s most prestigious order of chivalry, founded in 1348 by Edward III. The jug is dated “1576” in both side images: one depicting a crowned rose and the other (not shown) depicting a crowned “ER”. The monogram (or “royal cypher”) probably refers to Elizabeth I (Elizabeth Regina) who was queen of England when the jug was produced, but could just as easily harken back to Edward III (Edward Rex).

This design was copied from an actual Renaissance period piece, one of some forty-two Renaissance replicas first manufactured by Merkelbach in the early 1900s and reproduced regularly thereafter. These items were numbered 1 through 42, duplicating numbers applied to earlier Merkelbach offerings.
