Unusual Nürnberg subject matter

Merkelbach & Wick

Aus die Sammlung von Paul Van Eck

A very pretty stein, produced by Merkelbach & Wick, probably in their early years (around 1880 ~1890).

This child's stein features a rare decoration. The city of Nürnberg is the background to a scene where a man is pouring something into a funnel, which in turn is going over or into a child's head.

The verses is in Bavarian dialect and it reads:
"Wer hi nauch Nürnberg kumma thout,
Kaf ner recht tüchti ei.
Vergesst mer jo ain Troichter,
Denn der is super fei."

It translates as:
"Everyone who comes to Nueremberg
is encouraged to shop until they drop.
Make sure you don’t forget a funnel
because it is the best thing you can buy."

The stoneware stein measures just 10 centimeters, excluding the pewter lid.

The base features the factory marking of Merkelbach & Wick. There is no mold number.
