A glass stein, produced in the second half of the 19th century.
It is a pressed glass stein.
The stein has a pewter lid with a heavy 5-ringed 'closed' hinge.
The lid has engravings: "J:A", which will be the original owner's initials. Futher there is the number 42 engraved. This number would be used by the publican.
(In the 19th century it was common that one would have their own beer stein in a public bar. Your beer stein would be hanging in the bar along with the beer steins of other clients..
When you went for a pint, you would just indicate which number beer stein was yours and the publican would then know which stein to fill up.)
